“I now understand what is happening and how to respond to get myself back into mental physical, and spiritual balance. Addressing what was causing the inflammation that is the root cause of my health issues brought dramatic results.”

“The Functional Medicine Plan with Dr. Dyanna Haley-Rezac made me … um, “functional!” I am a 71 year old female, who is obese, an insulin dependent diabetic , have a long list of thyroid, and gastroesophageal issues, benign hypertension, suffer from brain trauma, have overall body aches and pains, and was not quite sick enough to stay in bed, but not quite well enough to have the energy to really do much except get by. I also have the benefit of great doctors on a concierge plan. My doctors actually give me adequate time, and share information between each other. Through my multiple medical specialists, I already knew that health is a balance of mind, body, and spirit. Health theory and my dismal reality were frustrating to me. To my surprise, I found that I am NOT an uncommon patient who is “too far gone” to get healthy. Addressing what was causing the inflammation that is the root cause of my health issues brought dramatic results. My A1c, that I had always worked hard to keep low went to 5.7 within months. I am reducing insulin dosages and getting off many meds. I am beginning to lose weight and my brain fog lifted. I can get through most days without naps and am able to do more around the house. I’m even addressing the burden of piled up things I couldn’t get around to. Food cravings are under control (most of the time.) Learning to be aware of changes and seeing results has created a cycle of getting better. I now understand what is happening and how to respond to get myself back into mental physical, and spiritual balance. I take more and longer walks and actually desire healthier eating. I have a long way to go. But, the direction is up. I have hope. I know that I can keep getting better.”

“Dyanna was there for me and took me through so many ways of dealing with the problem. She gave me a natural regimen which I followed and I got well and I am still well. I don’t take any medications and am happy as a clam.”

“Dyanna saved my life two times. I didn’t expect anything because of my issue with constipation and I had tried everything including Ayurvedic therapies until they didn’t work, nothing worked. I was in severe pain. Dyanna was there for me and took me through so many ways of dealing with the problem. She gave me a natural regimen which I followed and I got well and I am still well. I don’t take any medications and am happy as a clam. I was in so much pain. I was scared because of COVID to go to the hospital because I had two friends with similar situations and one died and the other has a colostomy bag. Dyanna taught me to listen to my body whispers. Any time you have any concern, I take it to Dyanna and she is very knowledgeable and helps calm me and help me through it. My parents had dementia who I took care of and I was afraid of this happening to me. I now know I can do something about this and have the tools to keep this from happening to me. I thought I was eating healthy growing up on a Mediterranean diet, but discovered in this program that there were foods I was eating that contributed to my problems. Dyanna is a wonderful teacher, she gives us what we need when we need it at our pace, encouraging, supporting, never dragging and we get better.”

“She became a partner in my journey to a better quality of life. The results are the late effects (of cancer) are almost nonexistent which has improved my life tremendously.”

“I have found Dr. Dyanna Haley-Rezac’s Functional Medicine Program most helpful and inspiring. I followed the Functional Medicine Model for many years. It is so logical to me to treat the root cause and not the symptoms. After my cancer treatment I was left with several late effects that were unpleasant and worrisome. I was burdened with diarrhea, sinusitis, respiratory infections, and UTI’s. I did not want to do the conventional treatment with more meds. Therefore, I choose to try Dr. Dyanna’s Functional Medicine Program. I found Dyanna to be highly competent, professional, and knowledgeable with a calm and caring approach. She was eager to share her knowledge and always taking time to explain if I didn’t understand. She was inspiring with her calm approach which worked so well for me. I felt valued throughout the program. She became a partner in my journey to a better quality of life. Her friendly persona and great smile kept me going in the program and was most appreciated. Finally, the results are the late effects are almost nonexistent which has improved my life tremendously. Thank you for an excellent program.”

“Nobody knew what was going on with my situation. You tailored my program to what I needed. This is a program that isn’t just a 16-week program, it is a lifestyle change. I can eat decent meals every day now without nausea and significantly less pain.”

“One of the big issues I had was nausea so bad that I had bags all over the house. I could go from 0 to 10 reaching for a bag quickly. I heard you worked with inflammation and with all of my surgeries on my back I had inflammation in my legs and nerve damage. Getting rid of the nausea was huge. Learning how to eat better so I could eat regular continuously. Getting rid of side and flank pain was huge. Nobody knew what was going on and my situation was more and more surgeries, 11 total, and opioids and nothing got rid of the pain. Nothing was working. I went to many doctors and no one knew what to do about the back pain, leg pain and nausea. I had so many tests looking for answers and they came back without anything. They said if I lost weight that would help. I lost 80 pounds and it didn’t change my pain or nausea. Modern medicine wasn’t working, I needed something else. I was getting frustrated with no answers. I didn’t like being a zombie with the medications and couldn’t drive. I had the choice of being pain free and not be able to do anything or have pain and work through it. I had to plan everything so I could recover from any activity. I needed someone to open the door to lifestyle changes that I could make and show me the way. You tailored my program to what I needed. This is a program that isn’t just a 16-week program, it is a lifestyle change. I can eat decent meals every day now without nausea and significantly less pain. I know if I continue with the changes, I will keep making progress.”

“I had Lyme Disease and auto-immune and neurological type things that go with it – chronic pain, adrenal fatigue, hormone imbalance, etc and was on crutches for 7 or 8 months. I was told by Western Medicine doctors “You’re crazy and anybody else is going to tell you the same thing.” (This program) has been immensely helpful in healing my foot, getting off crutches, and making my health a priority.”

“When I joined the program, I think I had been on crutches for about seven or eight months at that point from torn tendons and a neurological condition that had set in on top of that. I was pretty frustrated with being on crutches for sure. It did take some time, but I able to get off my crutches in January and I’ve been hiking and been doing yoga It has been immensely helpful and it definitely helped me heal my foot. Then also, even though it’s not necessarily a physical thing, but one of the more mental and emotional things for me, is that it’s really helped me find the willingness to see myself and my health as my number one priority. Before it was always, “I have to do this” or “I have to do that”. It was always the to-do list all the time of things that I had to do, including owning a business and all the things that go along with that. I think that my involvement in the program really helped me realize that immersing myself in work 100 percent of the time was not at all helpful in my healing. So really being willing to kind of shift my perspective, and make myself a priority, and not feeling like I always have to be working.

I do yoga, I meditate, I do pranayama breathing exercises and things like that. But, it really was the slowing down that you suggested and that really the program works on having you slow down and really see things for what they are. I think that I was moving through life at such high speed before, that no matter what I was doing to kind of help myself heal.

I had a lot of issues before joining the program. I actually have had chronic Lyme Disease for 22 years now. I wasn’t diagnosed until 2012, so it was something that I dealt with for a long time before I even had a diagnosis. So with chronic Lyme Disease, I have a lot of autoimmune-type things that go along with that. A lot of neurological things that go along with that. I had adrenal fatigue, hormone imbalance, you name it.

I spent years trying to heal using many different modalities and tools. I honestly think that I was just tired of being too tired to live my life fully. That was kind of the push that had me looking for a different way or additional way of trying to heal. I had actually spent a lot of time in isolation even before COVID due to that neurological condition that had set in my foot that just would not heal. I think that I had just gotten so frustrated with the isolation and not being around people, and not being able to do the things I love, that it really kind of pushed me to look for something else, and then I found you.

Back in about 2007 I think it was, I started working with western medicine doctors. I was just trying to get a diagnosis and find out what was wrong with me because I had such chronic pain in my body. I was only around 30 years old at the time, so it just really didn’t make a lot of sense. Western medicine was my first shot and I had pretty much zero luck with that, honestly. I went through probably half a dozen doctors, and living in Colorado, everyone told me and one doctor literally said to me, “You’re crazy and anybody else is going to tell you the same thing.” At that point, I was like never mind with western medicine, I’m going to find a different way. At the time, I had a chiropractor suggest to me that I start trying yoga and that I look into getting my medical marijuana card. For a couple of years, that was just how I managed the pain. It’s not to say that I healed necessarily from that, but in helping me manage the physical pain. Like I mentioned, I also did breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation. Really anything that I could try, I was willing to try. While some of those things helped a little bit, it definitely was not all that I needed. I’m not sure if I actually mentioned it, but naturopathic medicine was kind of what I feel got me on a healing path. So that was probably about 2011 that I had a friend suggest a naturopathic doctor to me.

You were actually the guest speaker for a pain management program that I was taking. I had been considering Functional Medicine for a really long time, but every time I would look to find a doctor, they were all in Boulder or Denver. And how do you pick a doctor not knowing anything about them? So I had a really hard time finding a Functional Medicine doctor. It’s really funny that you showed up at that program that day because I feel like you found me.

One of the first things suggested in the program was ordering the medical tests to see what was going on biologically, and you had me start the Elimination Diet. I was no stranger to elimination diets, but this one was a little bit different than ones I had done in the past. It was not quite as restrictive as some of the ones I had done. I honestly felt really great about those things right off the bat because, while I had many medical tests in the past, I don’t necessarily feel like they were very comprehensive. It was like it was looking for one single thing here or one single thing there. So I felt like what you had ordered for me was just more comprehensive and well rounded. I felt really excited that it might actually tell me something a little bit more than the tests I had done in the past. With the Elimination Diet, like I said, I actually felt really good about that because it wasn’t quite as restrictive as some of the ones I had done before. So I almost felt a little bit more of a sense of freedom than I did with some of the other elimination diets I had done. I’ve always felt immensely supported through this program.

For others thinking about Functional Medicine the program, I would say, keep on truckin’ first and foremost, and advocating for your own health. I feel like that was really something that I had to learn on my journey. If a doctor told me that something wasn’t wrong, well the doctor knows, so I just have to listen to the doctor. What I found out in the many years that I’ve been on this path is that you have to advocate for your own health. If you know that something isn’t right, something probably isn’t right. So really, just keep looking, keep going, ask for help when you need it, and treat yourself as a priority. You’re totally worth it. I think that sometimes that can be hard to see when doctors are telling you that nothing’s wrong and you know in your heart that something is wrong. That something isn’t right or something isn’t balanced. So keep advocating for yourself and keep making yourself a priority.”

“I needed a reset and this was the place to do just that. This is all rooted in science and listening to your body. This program is a partnership – between you and Dr. Dy. By month three of the program my energy was returning, I had dropped some extra weight and had found help with pain and the journey to which I had committed.”

Twenty twenty one was the most medical appointments I have ever had in my life. Hip pain, foot pain, allergies, weight gain, chronic cough and just not feeling myself resulted in a diagnosis of “you are getting older.” I was just down right fatigued mentally and physically.
I was not willing to settle for this response and looked for other options. I remembered practicing yoga with an individual who was pursuing functional medicine and made contact with Dr. Dy. I needed a reset and this was the place to do just that. Filling out the history form brought to light in a subtle way just how many toxins and trauma my body had been exposed. Getting the whole picture takes time but then you remember the head on collision you were in, the work you did on furniture restoration or remodeling houses and how many chemicals you have been exposed to during that time. And, a true picture of your diet. Even when you think you are doing well you see how many sugars are creeping in those “go to quick foods” all labeled healthy! I have had bladder cancer twice, a recent basal cell carcinoma along with heart disease running in the family. It was time to do some work on me.

This program is work. There is no magic pill; supplements, yes – based on your DNA and other test results. It can be frustrating and some days are tough. There will be trial and error. For me it was not a diet but instead behavior modification. This included cleaning out cupboards and refrigerator and refilling with organics. Reading labels is a must. Shopping became a scavenger hunt for good products and things that I liked. It had to be about what I could have, not about what I couldn’t have. For me the key to success was the elimination of dairy. By month three of the program my energy was returning, I had dropped some extra weight and had found a physical therapist and acupuncturist to help with pain and journey which I had committed. This program is a partnership – between you and Dr. Dy but any other practitioner. It is important to share the journey with each one of the practitioners.

There are some who will think you have fallen off the cliff. This is all rooted in science and listening to your body. DNA is the genetic makeup you were born with and it will not be changing. Bottom line – If you knew that you could help your body defend against cancer, heart disease, diabetes, would you? For me, the answer is yes. Dr. Dy is there to teach, but you must be inquisitive and a willing student. Give yourself a college semester. Be honest with yourself and your support system.

I recognize that the three months is just the beginning and consider myself lucky that I found dairy issues so early in the process. Ask questions. Be curious. Be an advocate for yourself. Feel better!!
